New Routes in Psychotherapy: Complexity Science, Maps, and Treatments

I had the privilege of delivering a one-hour plenary lecture, “New Routes in Psychotherapy, Complexity Science, Maps, and Treatments,” at this year’s Society for Psychotherapy Research conference in Bristol. The talk was very well received, and it sparked a genuinely engaging discussion afterward.

Two threads from that discussion stood out. First, how Dynamical Systems Treatments ground both familiar, standardized techniques and newer ones in a common dynamical rationale — anchored in the OTZ Master Equation and the Synchronisation Balance Algorithm. Because both old and new techniques are read against the same underlying model, their effects can be tracked, tested, and measured dynamically, rather than justified only by tradition or trial outcomes. That shared basis also opens the door to integrating and augmenting these techniques with AI. Second, what this framework could mean for therapist training: helping therapists build a clearer self-understanding of their own dynamical structure — their resilience, attachment style, and characteristic rupture-and-repair patterns — as part of their clinical development.
